The swollen abdomen seems to indicate a state of pregnancy, a feature observed on several female figurines and has led scholars to interpret them as fertility deities, but this is far from certain. Various features regarded as female (such as the swollen belly, breasts, folds in the abdomen) are sometimes displayed on male figurines too, probably due to the lack of special care of the prehistoric craftsman in rendering the gender or other anatomical details. However, the use of figurines might have been more complex than we assume, and the variety of their typology is related to their different functions.

Marble carving is the most characteristic product of Cycladic culture, and the abstract forms of its figurines have influenced several twentieth and twenty-first century artists, such as Constantin Brancusi, Amedeo Modigliani, Alberto Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, and Ai Weiwei.

Although Cycladic marble figurines and vases appeal to the modern viewer for their almost translucent whiteness, their creators loved colour and used it liberally on these objects for both practical and symbolic reasons.
The Cycladic islands of the Aegean were first inhabited by voyagers from Asia Minor around 3000 BCE and certain prosperity was achieved thanks to the wealth of natural resources on the islands such as gold, silver, copper, obsidian, and marble. This prosperity allowed for a flourishing of the arts and the uniqueness of Cycladic art is perhaps best illustrated by their clean-lined and minimalistic sculpture which is amongst the most distinctive art produced throughout the Bronze Age Aegean. These figurines were produced from 3000 BCE until around 2000 BCE when the islands became increasingly influenced by the Minoan civilization based on Crete. Small statuettes were sculpted from local coarse-grained marble and although different forms were produced, all share the same characteristics of being highly stylized with only the most general and prominent body features represented. The earliest examples were produced in the Neolithic period and were made until around 2500 BCE.
